When speaking of the greatest shows of all time a new name will forever be added to that list. The mastermind behind
rock on the range was not only a creative genius but should be considered the George Steinbrenner of the music world;
putting together a dream team of artist to fulfill everyone’s desire. No group more fitting could have filled the two-day
festivals kick off spot then Drive A. They are a young group of talent most not out of high school who wants to live their
dream of making it in the brutal world of music. They step on stage looking like boys but come out playing like men.
There sound comes across as if they are seasoned veterans and lead brunos lyrics are powerful yet with meaning. The
next artist to take the second stage is Ashes Divide who put on a stellar performance for the crowd that started to gather
around. It is now time to get the main stage started and Finger Eleven steps on stage known mostly for their break
through hit “One Thing” and now their current smash hit “Paralyzer” but as the crowd and ourselves shortly found out
that is not the limit to their musical career. Now I have seen this group perform in the past but not quite like this. It was
almost as though they decided to leave it all on the line and they did. When there set was through you could over hear
fans talking about the performance they had just put on.
Airbourne; which took the stage right after Ashes Divide is the type of band you want to like. This group is on a
mission to bring back good old rock and roll with an Australian flare to it. They just want to play and it showed as they
brought high energy and just rocked, simply rocked. Shinedown now takes over the main stage and for anyone that
knows this group knows they are capable of being the headliner no matter where they play. We headed back to the
second stage to catch a newer group called Red who also played very well. The nice thing with the set up of Rock On
the Range is that the set times were staggered so you were able to catch part of or all of each group playing on either
stage and walking to the stages was actually a lot easier than one would think. As day one moves along we see
powerhouse groups on the second stage like 10 Years, Theory Of A Deadman, and finished off with Filter who has been
around a very long time with some great music.
With all those bands already mentioned one would say that is a pretty good show line-up but wait a minute we still
have quite few main stage artist left like Killswitch Engage who simply killed it! Killswitch is a heavier band for those who
may not know but there lyrics come across strong and clear with the power of bringing any fan into the show. The
funniest artist to hit the stage could quite possible be Serj Tankian better known as the lead singer of the group System
Of A Down with his circus like antics you were unsure to laugh or to cheer either way you were dragged into his set and
mesmerized by his talent as well as his hat tipping and dancing. All of this before 6:30 at night is whole bunch to take in
and I really wanted to sit and think about the great artist that I had just seen all day long when muti platinum artist Staind
stepped on stage which has been a personal favorite for years now. Aaron Lewis has a voice like no other and no line
up would be complete without these rockers. Almost every song through their set was a hit at one time or another and to
see that many people singing in chorus is unbelievable. Staind finished up there set with Mudshovel as they do every
time they take the stage, the only thing I would say about Staind personally is that I would like to see them switch up
there set from time to time but that is only because I have seen them perform so many times in the past. Disturbed now
take their place in history as they step out in front of the crowd. I mean this group needs no introduction headlining
festivals such as Ozzfest to be anything but the headliner is incredible. I guess the only reason this group would not be
headlining is if a miracle happened and S.T.P was to get back together or something.
Oh wait a minute that is right day one is headlined by the long awaited return of the Stone Temple Pilots. For any fan
to be at S.T.P’s first show in so many years is something special. As tradition would hold true S.T.P came on stage late
as they always were so accustomed to doing but boy when they did it was a sound so loud and so true from the fans as
they went crazy. Screaming in unison S.T.P, S.T.P, S.T.P then silence as soon as Scott Weiland takes the microphone. It
was as though they have been playing together for ever with no break up at all. It is a overwhelming feeling knowing you
can say you were at a show like that listening live to something no one ever thought would happen. Every great Pilots
song was played not that I have heard a bad song from this group. The fans embraced them and welcomed them back
and we can only hope they stay together for years to come.
So day one is now concluded and will forever be burned in our memories as truly one of the best days in music
history. At this point I cannot even begin to think about what was in store for day two nor could I comprehend the groups
that would be playing on the second day. All I knew is that my ass just got rocked for almost 12 straight hours.
